‘Making’ has become something of a buzz word within the arts recently. I rather like it. Creativity is about making things. Imagination is about making things up. Activism is about making things change.
Last month I was commissioned by ‘Derbyshire Makes’ to be part of a festival in my hometown. There was a wide ranging selection of activities that people could get involved with - making sound tapestries, making stories, making puppets, making films. My job was to work with a local dementia carers group to make up a song for Glossop. We had two hours to do it, then I sang it in the town square.
This month I'm going to be making once again. This time at the National Festival of Making up in Blackburn. I've been asking to host a drop-in for people to explore what they love about music. From that I'm going to make a track. A song, a sound collage, a bit of both?
I love talking music. I love hearing about best gigs and buying singles, and first dances and funeral songs. I love how music weaves itself into the fabric of our lives. How to capture all that in sound and song?
I'm not sure yet but I'm really excited to find out.
